Background of the Study

Infection control is a critical component of post-operative care, as surgical site infections (SSIs) can lead to severe complications, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality rates (Ibrahim et al., 2023). Nurses play a key role in infection prevention, including sterilization, wound care, and adherence to hygiene protocols (Akinwale et al., 2024).

In Gombe State, post-operative infections remain a significant challenge in many hospitals, often due to gaps in infection control practices (Usman & Bello, 2023). Studies suggest that nurses with a higher level of infection control knowledge are better equipped to prevent SSIs and improve surgical recovery rates (Eze et al., 2024).

This study aims to examine the impact of nurses’ infection control knowledge on post-operative outcomes in Gombe State, identifying areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve healthcare hygiene standards, post-operative infections continue to pose serious risks in many hospitals in Gombe State. A lack of proper infection control knowledge among nurses has been linked to poor post-surgical outcomes (Ahmed et al., 2024). However, there is limited research assessing the direct relationship between nurses' infection control knowledge and patient recovery in this region.

This study seeks to evaluate the level of infection control knowledge among nurses in Gombe State and its impact on post-operative patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of infection control practices in Gombe State hospitals.

2. To examine the relationship between nurses' infection control knowledge and post-operative patient outcomes.

3. To recommend strategies for enhancing infection control training among nurses.

Research Hypotheses

1. Higher infection control knowledge among nurses leads to improved post-operative outcomes.

2. Inadequate infection control training contributes to increased post-surgical complications.

3. Implementing continuous infection control education programs will reduce post-operative infection rates.

Definitions of Terms
